Mother’s Day

Mother’s DayMother’s Day is traditionally observed in Great Britain on the fourth Sunday in Lent. This is usually in March. The day used to be known as Mothering Sunday and dates from the time when many girls worked away from home as domestic servants in big households, where their hours of work were often very long. Mothering Sunday was established as a holiday for these girls and gave them an opportunity of going home to see their parents, especially their mothers. They used to take presents with them, often given to them by the lady of the house. Читать далее Mother’s Day

Mikhail Lomonosov

Mikhail LomonosovMikhail Lomonosov was born in 1711 in the family of a fisherman in the northern coastal village of Denisovka not far from Arkhangelsk. When he was ten years of age his father began to take him sea fishing. That dangerous life taught the precocious youngster to observe the phenomena of nature more closely. During the long winter nights the boy studied his letters, grammar and arithmetic diligently.

Since he was the son of a peasant, he was refused admission to the town school, so he walked to Moscow. By concealing his peasant origin he gained admission to the Slavonic-Greek-Latin Academy and for five years lived from hand to mouth on 3 kopecks a day. The noblemen’s sons studying with him made fun of the twenty-year-old giant, who despite their jeers and his own desperate poverty, made rapid progress.

After 5 years came the chance of entering the Academy of Sciences as there weren’t enough noble-born students to fill the quota. His ability and diligence attracted the attention of the professors, and as one of the best students he was sent abroad. He spent all the time there in delving into the work of leading European scientists studying chemistry, metallurgy, mining and mathematics. On his return to Russia in 1745 he was made a professor and the first Russian scientist to become a member of the Academy of Sciences.

For versatility Lomonosov has no equal in Russian and world science. Many of his ideas and discoveries won recognition only in the XIXth century. He was the first to discover the vegetable origin of coal, for instance, and as a poet and scientist he played an eminent role in the formation of the Russian literary language, eliminating distortions and unnecessary foreign borrowings. He had a great thirst for knowledge. The great son of the Russian people Mikhail Lomonosov died in 1765. His living memorial is the Moscow University which he founded in 1755. How he would have appreciated the gigantic building which stands on the hills where Napoleon stood in 1812 to watch Moscow bum.

Mark Twain (1835-1910)

mark twainMark Twain’s real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens. He was the founder of the realistic American novel of the present day.

Not without reason E.Hemingway wrote: “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called “Huckleberry Finn””.

In his youth he worked as an apprentice-printer, then a river-pilot on the Mississippi, a miner in Nevada, a journalist writing humorous newspaper items under the pseudonym of “Mark Twain”. When Mark Twain worked as a river-pilot he had to measure the depth of the Mississippi and used to say the words which sounded like “Mark Twain”. The phrase actually means “two fathoms deep”.

Mark Twain became famous for his humorous stories about the life of common American people.

Both adults and children enjoy Mark Twain’s books. His mocking humour is based on the common sense of plain people whom the author always describes with warmth of human understanding and sympathy.

His best works are: “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” (1876), “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” (1884), “The Prince and the Pauper” (1882), “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court” (1889).

Here are the titles of some Mark Twain’s works with their Russian translations:

“The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” — “Приключения Тома Сойера”

“The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” — “Приключения Гекльберри Финна”

“The Prince and the Pauper”— “Принц и нищий”

“A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court”— “Янки из Коннектикута при дворе короля Артура”.

We Like Hiking

Before we go hiking we hold a discussion.

We decide what things we have to prepare and the places we’d like to visit.

It is often rather difficult to choose a place we’d like to get acquainted with; everybody has his own idea. The discussion is usually rather exciting. Читать далее We Like Hiking

Your Future Profession

In early childhood children tell their parents whom they would like to be when they grow up.

Your Future ProfessionIn school students begin thinking of their future profession.

There are lots of professions in the world, and all of them are interesting and exciting. So it’s very hard to discover your vocation in life.

The choice of profession depends on your abilities. If you are good at humanities you should choose something in this field. And if you are good at natural sciences you should choose something closely connected with them.

I would like to become a chemist because I like chemistry. I think that it is a very interesting subject, but I am not so good at it so I think that I am not suitable for this profession. In spite of all I possess some qualities which are needed in this field.

I think that my future profession will be closely connected with computers. I am capable to work with them, and I also possess the qualities needed in this work. They are accuracy, energy, carefulness. But I hesitate if I have enough patience. I must develop it if I want to become a computer operator.

I know that it would be better to choose a profession of an interpreter or any other occupation connected with Russian and literature because I am good at these subjects but when I began to study the computer skills that was what I have been looking for. In our modern world it’s hard to do without computers. They are needed everywhere, and I hope that my interests in this subject will never change in spite of any circumstances.
