Washington, D.C.

Washington DCWashington is the capital city of the United States. It is located on the north bank of the Potomac River.

Washington is one of the most beautiful and unusual cities in the United States. It has little industry, and only one million people. One reason Washington looks differ­ent from other cities is that no building in the city may be more than 40 meters tall. There are no skyscrapers, because they would hide the city’s many monuments from view.

New York is the largest city in the United States and one of the largest in the world. It is in the southeastern corner of New York State, where the Hudson River empties into the Atlantic Ocean.New York City

Five boroughs (towns) joined together make up the city of New York. The borough of Manhattan takes up Manhattan Island. The boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens lie across the East River from Manhattan, on Long Island. The Bronx, another borough, is on the mainland, north of Manhattan and Queens. The fifth borough, Staten Island, is in New York Bay.

The largest library in the world is in Washington, DC. It is called the Library of Congress. It has one copy of every book written by American writers.

The congress meet at the Capitol building. Government lawyers work in the Justice Department. The President of the US lives and works in the White House. Important decisions are made in the White House. It belongs to everyone in the USA. You can visit it almost every day of the year. It is open for tourists who can see the President or the first lady walking down the halls.

The White House is a symbol of the country. Washington DC was a little village on the Potomac river. About 200 years ago when US was a young country people began to talk about where the capital should be and where the president should live. And they chose Washington, DC. The city is well planned. The heart of it is the Capitol. It took more than 8 years to build this Capitol. The first stone of it was laid on October, 13, 1792. Washington, DC is one of the most beautiful cities in the USA.

Moscow is the cultural centre of Russia

Moscow is the cultural centre of RussiaMoscow is the capital of our country. Thousands of people from foreign countries like to visit Moscow.

There are many theatres, cinemas and museums in Moscow. Everybody knows the Bolshoi Theatre and is fond of it.

In Tverskaya Street (the central street of Moscow) you can see monuments to Yury Dolgoruky, A.S.Pushkin, V.Mayakovsky.

Red Square is the heart of our capital. It is the oldest and the most beautiful square in the city. People from all parts of the world come here. They see the Kremlin witn its famous monuments and museums. There is a well- known monument to Minin and Pozharsky here.

The sound of the Kremlin Clock is known to all those who listen to the Moscow radio.

There is the History Museum in Red Square. Its collections tell us interesting stories about the history of our country and the life of its people from old times to our days. People like to come to Red Square and take pictures of it.

Moscow is green and beautiful. There are many parks in it.

The Moscow Underground (the Metro) is famous all over the world.

Moscow

MoscowMoscow is a political, industrial, scientific, financial and cultural centre of Russia. Moscow is the seat of the Russian Federal Government. All official guests of our state visit Moscow.

Moscow offers numerous tourists an astonishing va­riety of scenes. In this city one meets the past and the present, the old and the modern. Moscow is famous for its historical points of interest.

Moscow was founded in 1147 by the prince Yury Dolgoruky (long-armed). The Kremlin is the heart of our capital. The history of its buildings dates back to the 11th century. There are 20 towers on the top of the Kremlin. The most beautiful is Spasskaya Tower which is famous for its architecture. The Kremlin wall stretches for 2 km. and 200m and it is 5m high. It looks grand.

Our capital has a very ancient and interesting history. More than once it has been ruined and restored. Today the face of Moscow is being changed. It is becoming a huge European city which tries to preserve its past and at the same time to fulfill the functions of a modern city.

The mayor and the Moscow Government do their best to create the atmosphere of the old Moscow with its unique cathedrals, many buildings of great historic value.

Trafalgar Square

Trafalgar SquareTrafalgar Square is the natural centre of London and the best starting point for a tour of the capital.

The Square was named so to commemorate Nelson’s victory at the battle of Trafalgar in 1805. There is the monument in the centre, known as Nelson’s Column. The figure of the great seaman is on top. The statue of Nelson is 16 feet high. There are the lions at the foot of the column and the large platform which is used by the orators.

The square is the place for all sorts of meetings and demonstrations. When the square is not used for demonstrations, it is full of visitors feeding the pigeons5 or watching the traffic.

On the north side of the Square are the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery. The National Gallery has an outstanding collection of paintings from British, Italian, Spanish, French, Dutch and other famous schools.
