The Old Man and the Sea ( by Ernest Hemingway)

The Old Man and the Sea

TheOldManAndTheSea

This is a short but powerful story for which Hemingway was awarded the Nobel prize for literature in 1954. The idea expressed in “For Whom the Bell Tolls”, that the loser must not lose heart, is developed here.

For two nights and two days Santiago, an old fisherman, struggles in a small fishing-boat at sea to land a great fish that he has caught.

At last he manages to tie the fish to the side of the boat, and brings it ashore. But by this time there is little of it left but the shark-eaten carcass.

The old man is, in fact, defeated by the sharks, but he remains optimistic. “Man is not made for defeat”, he says. “A man can be destroyed but not defeated”.

Here are the titles of some of Ernest Hemingway’s works with their Russian translations.
