Public Holidays in the USA

“I’ve heard about Memorial Day. What is it dedicated

to?”

“Oh, yes, it was first called Decoration Day because people decorated soldiers’ graves with flowers and flags on that day. It is celebrated now on the last Monday of May.

After World War I ended in 1918, Decoration Day became a day to remember everyone who died fighting in the U.S. wars: the Civil War, Spanish-American War, World Wars I and II, Korean War, the Vietnam War.” “And when is Thanksgiving Day celebrated?”

“Well, this holiday is one of the most favourite holidays with us. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. It was first celebrated in 1621 when the first settlers from England came to America. The Indians helped the first settlers to survive during the severe winter. The Pilgrims celebrated the first harvest festival in November and invited the Indians to thank them.

Since that time the fourth Thursday of November has been celebrated as Thanksgiving Day. It has become a tradition with Americans to get together on this day and give a great holiday dinner in one house. The roast turkey has become a traditional national dish.”

“Thank you very much, Carol, for the information.”
