O.Henry’s real name was William Sydney Porter. He is a well-known American writer.
Before he changed his name, he had been a bank office worker, a cowboy, a reporter, and a tramp trying to find a way to make a living.
O.Henry had a broad knowledge of the life of common people. They are the main characters of his stories, and their fates comprise those unusual and unexpected plots which never fail to have surprise endings.
The literary legacy of O.Henry includes two hundred and seventy three short stories. Most of them are filled with the writer’s warm human sympathy for common people: “The Gift of the Magi”, “A Service of Love”, “The Cop and the Anthem”, “An Unfinished Story”, “The Last Leaf’, “While the Auto Waits”, “The Third Ingredient”, and many others.
